Encouragement for Today

Living On the Mountain

The Christian walk is through valleys, hills and mountains. If you have been a Christian very long you know that being on the mountain is a good place to be, but you probably know that sometimes the climb to the top is tough. When you get there you will want to stay. I don't think many of us work toward being in the valley. I doubt that King David prayed, "God, let me get off this mountain so I can walk though the valley of the shadow of death." I am sure all of us would rather stay in a place of safety and comfort, but sometimes God moves us from the mountain top to the valley to teach us things that He wants us to learn.

The children of Israel left Egypt on what should have been an eleven day journey (Duet. 1:2) to the promised land. But, 40 years later they were still roaming around. In their trials they settled on Mt. Horeb. It appears they became comfortable there and decided to stay.

Then God spoke to Moses and He relayed the message to them, "Ye have dwelt long enough in the this mount." (Duet. 1:6) He told them to come off Mt. Horeb and go the the mount of the Amorites. Now, to get from mountain to another, you have to cross a valley and climb another hill.

The reason an 11 day took 40 years was because of their complaining, fault finding and rebellion, but it seems that they had found a nice place to camp before God moved them.

Did you know that if we fight against God long enough, complain long enough and do it our way long enough He may just back off and let us wander for a while? That is what happened here, but a time came when He said, "Enough is enough". He said "You have dwelt long enough on this mount." In other words, "Get up and get busy! I am tired of your lazy attitudes and non productive lives."

I am sure this doesn't fit you, but there are some who have been idle long enough. He is ready to get them ready to get them moving. For those who may fit this situation, I say, "Get up! Leave this mountain and go where God has called you."

Do you remember a time when a vision burned in your heart and soul? A time when you were ready to change the world for Him? If so, what happened? Why are you camped and comfortable and staying in one place? It's a lot easier, right? Don't you want to renew your drive and vision and leave your mountain to do His work?

If so, I suggest you spend some quality time with the Holy Spirit. Remember, He is your guide. Pray until you hear from the Lord and ask Him for the right direction. He will not refuse you or leave you alone.

May the Lord bless you greatly.
